Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette scores 70 for Shanghai Sharks

Jimmer Fredette, who made a name for himself by breaking Danny Ainge’s BYU all-time scoring record, got back to what he knows best on Monday – scoring points. 

Fredette scored a season-high 70 points for the Shanghai Sharks of China’s CBA. He finished the Sharks' 136-129 overtime loss to the Sichuan Blue Whales shooting 50% from the field (18-for-36) and 3-pointers (11-for-22) . He also managed a perfect 23-for-23 from the free throw line while coming one assist and two rebounds shy of his first triple-double for the season.   

This is the third time Fredette has eclipsed the 70 point mark for the Sharks – the first since returning from a two-year stint playing for Panathinaikos in Greece. He previously scored 75 in 2018 and 73 in 2017 – all three resulting in losses.

Fredette is averaging 26.3 points shooting 45% from the field and 38% from three through 32 games this season. The Sharks currently sit in 13th place in the CBA standings. 

His historic BYU career was capped with a trip to the Sweet 16 and being named the Naismith National Player of the Year.

Fredette was drafted 10th overall in 2011 and hNBA career spanned parts of six season with appearances for the Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns, most recently in the 2018-19 season.
