LAS VEGAS –— Nonito Donaire is known as “The Filipino Flash,” but it was young upstart Jessie Magdaleno who showed superior flash Saturday night.

Magdaleno, 24, from Las Vegas, used his speed and a strong first half of the fight to remain undefeated and win a stunning unanimous decision and take the WBO junior featherweight belt from Donaire, 33, who came on strong at the end of the fight, but to no avail.

Donaire nearly had Magdaleno out in the 12th round, but it was not enough.

The judges at ringside scored it 116-112 twice and 118-110 all for Magdaleno.

“I worked so hard for this. It feels amazing,” said Magdaleno, who landed 125 power punches to Donaire’s 101. “I can’t believe I won the title against a guy like him. I don’t have words to express how I feel right now.”

Magdaleno (24-0, 17 KOs) said during the final press conference Thursday that he hoped Donaire would bring his “A” game  Saturday because he was going to “rip Donaire’s head off.”

Both fighters were bloodied by the end of the fight, but Donaire (37-4, 24 KOs), a five-division champion, was disappointed in the judges’ decision.

“We clearly won the fight,” Donaire said.  “He’s a hard puncher but we got control of the fight in the second half. Losing never crossed my mind.

“He had power, but I thought I controlled the fight.”
