Jaguars passing game could push fantasy teams over top

Ernie Estrella and Cory Steger, USA TODAY Sports
Chad Henne looked right at home as the Jaguars' quarterback as the team finally won at home Sunday.
  • Jaguars QB Chad Henne has 615 yards, six touchdowns and one interception in his last two games
  • Against Buffalo, Jags WR Cecil Shorts has a good chance to break some of his signature long gainers
  • Any Ravens-Steelers game figures to be low-scoring, so bench Joe Flacco, Torrey Smith, Heath Miller

You always want to start your best players, especially in what is very likely the biggest week of the fantasy season. But if you're faced with a key starter playing in bad weather (Carson Palmer) or not at all (Percy Harvin), you might want to start your Jaguars ... and bench your Colts.

START

QB Chad Henne, Jacksonville Jaguars (at Buffalo)

If injuries have put you in a pinch for a quarterback, Henne is a suitable Week 13 fill-in. Henne has the hot hand the last two weeks with 615 yards, six touchdowns and one pick -- while also helping put Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts on the fantasy map. The Jaguars' run game has remained stagnant while Maurice-Jones Drew recovers, so for now, they have to pass to stay in games.

RB Mikel Leshoure, Detroit Lions (vs. Indianapolis)

The Colts have settled down a bit since giving up three touchdowns to the Jets' Shonn Greene in Week 6, but they're still not stuffing the run. Leshoure didn't practice until Thursday but he'll likely start and take advantage of the Colts surrendering an average of 105.5 yards and a touchdown per game to running backs.

WR Cecil Shorts, Jacksonville Jaguars (at Buffalo)

The Jags will probably be without Jones-Drew for a sixth straight game and that means Shorts, the Jags' most consistent playmaker, will be on center stage again. Fantasy owners have to love that 50% of Shorts' receptions have gone for 10 or more yards – and who doesn't love the 302 yards after catch and nine receptions of over 25 yards. Meanwhile, the Bills are giving up the seventh-most PPR fantasy points to receivers. With this newfound aerial attack, it's certain that either Shorts or Justin Blackmon will score, maybe both. Most assuredly, both should fill the stat sheet on Sunday.

TE Martellus Bennett, New York Giants (at Washington)

Even though they haven't allowed a tight end to score on them in three weeks, the Redskins are still the worst at defending the position. They've allowed touchdowns to seven different TEs and five have posted 60 or more receiving yards. Bennett had five receptions and 79 yards on the 'Skins back in Week 7. If the Giants offense is truly back on track, then Bennett is a good bet.

SIT

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens (at Pittsburgh)

Flacco has never been a high-scoring quarterback. This week against the Steelers, he's going to be a low-scoring one. Games featuring these two teams are typically low-scoring affairs, and Flacco always struggles against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. When Flacco faced the Steelers in Week 11, he ended up with 164 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers, and he failed to lead the Ravens to an offensive touchdown. The game's only touchdown was scored on a return by Jacoby Jones. Flacco has some intriguing matchups left on his schedule; this week is not one of them.

RB Shonn Greene, New York Jets (vs. Arizona)

Though he is still receiving around 15 carries a game, Greene is not the main running back for the New York Jets. That honor now goes to Bilal Powell, who has three rushing touchdowns in the past two weeks. With the season being the disaster that it has been for the Jets, they're going to continue to give Powell an opportunity to prove himself. As for Greene, he'll continue to receive consistent touches but expect Powell to do all the scoring. Greene should only be considered an option in deep leagues.

WR Torrey Smith, Baltimore Ravens (vs. Pittsburgh)

Adding Smith to the sit list is a tough decision. He is coming off a seven-catch, 144-yard game last week against the Chargers. He has seven touchdowns this season. He is the main receiving threat for the Ravens. The problem is the matchup with Pittsburgh. Two weeks ago the Ravens struggled offensively, and Smith caught just one pass for seven yards. Any other week Smith is a lock in your starting lineup. This week he belongs on the bench.

TE Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers (at Baltimore)

Yet another player from this week's Pittsburgh-Baltimore matchup. Miller has been a fantasy revelation this season, and has been a key cog of the Steelers offense. However, he caught just two passes for 22 yards against the Ravens in Week 10. Also consider the Steelers are going to start Charlie Batch at quarterback, and although Batch and Miller connected six times last week, don't expect that same kind of production this week.
