NFL writer says he was fired by New York Post for anti-Donald Trump tweet

Bart Hubbuch announces his firing.

Bart Hubbuch tweeted out a series of numbers, and it cost him his job as a lead NFL reporter with the New York Post.

The numbers were the problem; 10 days ago, Hubbuch compared the inauguration of President Trump to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 terror attacks. Here's the same-day deleted tweet - which he pinned to the top of his profile page briefly - captured by Barstool Sports:

Twitter.

The tweet was followed by a pair of apologies, also since deleted ( via Awful Announcing):

"I have deeply held beliefs and feelings, and I let emotion get the best of me today. Again, my apologies to anyone I offended."

"My sincere apologies for comparing this day to 9/11. It was insensitive and wrong, and I shouldn't have done it."

Hubbuch's "important status update" seemed to underplay the offending tweet:

"Last Friday, I was fired by the New York Post for tweeting on my own time seven days earlier my personal belief that Donald Trump becoming President of the United State is a national tragedy."

Hubbuch is known for tweaking NFL fans, particularly Patriots die-hards. Earlier this year, he tweeted, "Totally not-shocking fact: The Patriots have never had a black QB start a game in their 57-year history. Jacoby Brissett would be the first." The uproar - including from Fox Sports 1's Katie Nolan - led him to briefly suspend his Twitter account.

Kirk Minihane of WEEI may have been Hubbuch's foremost Boston media rival.

The Post, which is owned by News Corp, did not respond to For The Win's request for comment. Hubbuch declined to add beyond his tweet.
