Welcome to FTW Explains, a recurring segment here at For The Win where he look at the biggest or oddest stories out there on the internet and provide some context and understanding for all of you good readers out there.

Today we're taking on the great bath sheet/towel debate that raged on the internet for a few hours on Sunday and into Monday. We'll all forget about this in a few days, but for now, you might be wondering what exactly is going on here.

We're here to help. Let's get to the questions and, together, we will Figure This Out.

So, what is going on here?

On Sunday freelance journalist Yashar Ali responded to a general Twitter query about how many towels a couple needs.

His response was this:

That seems like an unbelievably large amount of towels for two people to own.

Yeah. That's what the internet said. Responses ranged from people questioning if Yashar Ali and his significant other were cleaning up bodies or had an inordinate amount of house guests or what.

To give some context, I and my wife own what I consider to be an insane amount of towels because we combined forces when we moved in together and then got a bunch for wedding gifts. We have 10 towels, 6 hand towels, and a couple wash cloths. I think it's excessive, and this doesn't even come close to what Ali is recommending as a minimum.

Wait. What is a bath sheet?

Really good question. I had no idea. Ali provided an explanation below his original tweet. It appears to be a very large towel.

Doesn't 10 bath sheets and 10 towels seem like so many towels?

So. Many. Towels. I can see some people preferring bath sheets over bath towels, because some people like a big towel. Great. And I can see how some people might want two towels for each person, plus a spare four when those are washing, then two for guest towels. But ten of each? What on earth are you going to do with all those?

Did people have jokes?

You bet they did.

It's been a good day on the internet.
