A 42-year-old Zamboni driver lived all of our dreams this weekend and it was awesome

For The Win

This is the Morning Win, by Andy Nesbitt.

How was your weekend, pretty good? Maybe you finally tried out that restaurant you've been dying to check out. Or perhaps you just had some fun with some old friends while throwing back some of the new White Claw flavors. Or maybe you just zoned out on your couch and binged the heck out of Netflix.

Those sound like good times and all but I'm guessing none of us had a better weekend than Dave Ayres, a 42-year-old Zamboni driver who got called on to play in a real, live NHL game.

Because that, my friends, is what you call living the sports dream. One moment you're sitting there watching two professional teams in your favorite sport playing a game, and the next moment you're suiting up in a real uniform and going out there and PLAYING in that game.

What a trip that must be.

That's exactly what happened to Ayers, who has spent the past few years working as he building operations manager at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, on Saturday night and I couldn't be more jealous of him.

Besides his full-time job, Ayers spends some of his time serving as a practice goalie for the AHL's Toronto Marlies, an affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also often suits up as the Leafs' third goalie in practice, where he gets to feel like a professional athlete while not having to face the pressures performing in a professional game. Because of that, the team has him come to home games where he technically serves as the emergency goalie but really he just sits there and watches hockey games for free, which isn't too shabby.

That all changed Saturday night, however, as two goalies got hurt and he was called upon to suit up and get in the game. But not for the Maples Leafs, but rather for the team the Maple Leafs were playing - the Carolina Hurricanes.

And then Ayers went out on the ice and beat his beloved Maple Leafs in what has to be one of the best sports stories I've seen in quite some time.

This all happened after the Hurricanes had both of their goalies get knocked out of the game. The team then got some help by being notified of Ayers' availability. He entered the game in the second period wearing his white and blue helmet, which is Toronto's colors, and promptly gave up goals on the first two shots he faced.

He didn't scored on again, however, as he helped the Hurricanes beat the Leafs, 6-3.

Ayers, who was glowing after the game, spoke about how players on the Hurricanes - who didn't know who their new goalie was - told this stranger to not worry and just have fun. They told him it wouldn't matter if he gave up 10 goals and they got blown out, that this was just going to be an experience for everyone involved. That calmed Ayers down and allowed him to stop eight of the 10 shots he faced.

How cool is that?

Those teammates also gave him an awesome hero's welcome when walked into the locker room after the game, showering him with whatever drinks they had on them.

What makes this even better? Ayers had a kidney transplant years ago and once feared that he'd never play hockey again.

Now he has one NHL win.

At the age of 42.

Yup, Dave Ayers had a better weekend than all us combined. And I couldn't be happier for him.

Tyson Fury also had a pretty good weekend.

Fury put on an absolute show Saturday night in Las Vegas, and that was before he even stepped foot inside the ring for his heavyweight title fight against Deontay Wilder. He then dominated the fight before winning via TKO in the seventh round, after he got a taste of Wilder's blood. For real. It was a wild night in Vegas and now Fury is one of the biggest sports stars in the world and I can't wait for his next fight.
