Bryson DeChambeau's first round at the Masters shows how goofy golf is

If you're a golf enthusiast like myself then you already know just how goofy the game can be.

Chances are you have played at your local muni where you got paired up with someone who was a lot older than you, was probably wearing golf shoes that were like 20 years old, and had clubs that were older.

Then after a while in the round you realized they were just consistently hitting the ball like 180 yards off the tee right down the middle while yours were going much farther but were being sprayed all over the course.

You then probably found yourself saying the same two words to them often through the round - nice par.

At the end of the round maybe you guys shot a similar score or maybe they beat you by a lot because you were too busy spraying the ball all over the place instead of playing some smart, consistent golf.

Well, that happened Thursday at the Masters of all places, as Bryson DeChambeau finished his first round at Augusta with a 2-under 70.

Also finishing with a 2-under 70 was 62-year old Larry Mize, who is in the tournament because he won a Green Jacket with one of the most memorable shots in Masters history back in 1987, six years before DeChambeau was born.

While it's not unusual at all for old dudes to be able to shoot similar scores as young dudes in professional golf, here's where Thursday's rounds for these two guys gets really silly, from PGATour.com's Sean Martin - DeChambeau's average driving distance was 334 yards. Mize's average driving distance was 247 yards.

Now that is just the golfiest golf thing ever.

DeChambeau, who got off to a rough start Thursday, spent the quarantine transforming his body through intense workouts and like 24 protein shakes a day.

Mize isn't on Instagram but I think it's safe to say he didn't spend quarantine power lifting and drinking drinks that were programmed to increase his muscle mass.

But when the second round of the Masters begins later today, Mize will be tied with the young bomber who is trying to change the way the game is played.

And that's just goofy.
