The legend of Bryson DeChambeau just continues to grow

Back in July I wrote about how Bryson DeChambeau is the villain that the PGA Tour needs.

And you know what? I wasn’t wrong. At all! And yes, I am patting myself on the back here but whatever.

The legend of DeChambeau continues to grow and I am here for it. All of it.

DeChambeau took over the golf world this past weekend by doing things we’ve never seen before. He had the crowd jacked up on the sixth tee on Saturday before bombing a 370-yard drive over water on a par 5 that had him celebrating while the ball was in the air. I’ve watched a lot of golf in my life and I’ve never seen anything like that moment. The Tour should switch it’s logo to this image of DeChambeau going nuts after that drive.

Then on Sunday he went out on the same sixth hole and hit the same crazy shot, only this time he was tied for the lead and hit it 377 yards. Everyone was wondering if he’d attempt that tee shot while in contention and he didn’t hesitate to make it happen.

It was beautiful. It was hilarious. And it paid off as he went on to win the tournament by a stroke. It’s his eighth win on Tour and his first one since he ran away from the field at the U.S. Open last September.

DeChambeau, who drastically changed the shape of his body during quarantine last spring, is becoming the needle that pro golf needs right now. Fans on Twitter were speculating about what he would do on the sixth hole on Sunday hours before he even stepped on the tee box. That stuff doesn’t happen in this game.

DeChambeau also had some classic bro moves on Sunday, too. First, he was heard complaining about how bad the bunkers were after he hit a bad shot and then he kicked off his post-round interview on the 18th green by thanking all of his dopey sponsors (and forgetting a few) like some NASCAR driver.

This big meatball is going to be one of the favorites this week at the Players’ Championship and he’s going to be the favorite at The Masters next month.

He’s been must-see TV for a while now and that will only become more true as he continues to do what he did this weekend at Bay Hill.

His game and his desire to do whatever it takes to make himself better has him in these big positions. DeChambeau has never been afraid to do things differently (and tell everyone how he’s doing everything different) and I love it.

I can’t wait until Thursday when he tees it up again and lets it fly.
