We all need to laugh at ourselves more

Andy Nesbitt
USA TODAY

This is the Morning Win, by Andy Nesbitt.

After getting a birdie on the 16th hole in the fist round of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday to move to one over his round, Byeong Hun An made the long walk over to the 17th tee box to play the legendary par-3 island hole.

Shortly after arriving there he hit his tee shot into the water.

Then he took a drop and hit his next shot
 into the water.

Then he took another drop and hit his next shot
 into the water.

Then he took ANOTHER drop and
 yup, you guessed it
hit his next shot into the water. Four water balls!

Finally An was able to get a ball to stay on the green and two-putted for an 11 on the hole, which is the second-highest score on that hole in Players Championship history.

He then went on to hit his drive on 18 in the water and took a double-bogey six on the par-4 closing hole.

Just like that he finished with an 11-over 83 and his tournament all but came to an end.

So how’d he react to that 11? Did he blame the tricky hole? Did he get upset about wind? Did he blame his equipment? Did he hide from the world?

No. An didn’t do any of that.

Instead, he had fun with it and basically laughed at himself on Twitter by quote-tweeting a tweet that asked people to tag a friend who would shoot an 11 on the 17th hole and tagged himself.

I mean, how great is that? That right there is a reminder for all of us. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Don’t always look to blame others. And most importantly – LAUGH AT YOURSELF.

Speaking of laughing at yourself, Ian Poulter did that after his bad first round at The Players Championship, too. Poulter shared a video of himself having lunch with Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, and Henrik Stenson and had a lot of fun pointing out how much they all stunk on Thursday (as a group they were 29 over!). I’ve watched the video like 10 times and laughed each time, especially at the end when he calls them “muppets.”

These were some pretty awesome ways to react to some pretty bad days at one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year.

I think we can all enjoy ourselves more if we follow these leads and laugh at ourselves more. This stuff isn’t life or death type stuff for those golfers and neither is a lot of stuff that we might screw up each day.

No more beating ourselves up over things we do wrong. More laughing.

Make a dumb mistake that doesn’t really have a serious impact on anything? Don’t be embarrassed. Instead, point at your dumb self and laugh.

Really stink it up on a first date and are in no way expecting a second date? Laugh at yourself.

Mess up a new meal you were trying to cook and think you ruined everyones’ night? Laugh at yourself.

Laugh it off, people!
