For The Win

Yes, you can BELIEVE it: Ted Lasso, the Apple TV+ series that shocked the world and became a beloved hit in 2020 is back Friday with its Season 2 premiere.

Here are some of the best lines that came out of Ted Lasso's mouth, lines and moments that had us either laughing really hard or thinking really deep about life (or about if ghosts believe in themselves).

Let's get into it.

1. The 'Be Curious' darts speech

“Guys have underestimated me my entire life and for years I never understood why – it used to really bother me. But then one day I was driving my little boy to school and I saw a quote by Walt Whitman, it was painted on the wall and it said, ‘Be curious, not judgmental.’ I like that. (Throws triple 20). So I get back in my car and I’m driving to work and all of the sudden it hits me – all them fellas that used to belittle me, not a single one of them was curious. You know, they thought they had everything figured out so they judged everything and they judged everyone. And I realized that their underestimating me – who I was had nothing to do with it. Because if they were curious they would have asked questions. Questions like, ‘Have you played a lot of darts, Ted?’ (Throws triple 20). To which I would have answered, “Yes sir. Every Sunday afternoon at a sports bar with my father from aged 10 until I was 16 when he passed away. Barbecue sauce. (Throws triple bullseye to win).”

2. Ted's dislike of tea

Rebecca Welton: “How do you take your tea?”

Ted: “Well, usually I take it right back to the counter because someone’s made a horrible mistake.”

(Ted takes a sip)

Rebecca: “Well?”

Ted: “You know, I always figured that tea was going to taste like hot brown water. And you know what? I was right. Yeah, it’s horrible. No, thank you.”

3. The line about God

Rebecca: “So I spoke to the owner of The Sun.”

Ted: “You spoke to God!?”

Boss: “No, the owner of the newspaper.”

Ted: “Oh.”

4. Ted's halftime speech about change

“I know change can be scary. One minute, you are playing freeze tag out there at recess with all your buddies. Next thing you know, you’re getting zits, your voice gets low, and every time your art teacher, Ms. Scanlon, leans over your desk to check and see how your project’s going, you feel all squiggly inside. She was a striking woman. Not classically beautiful but striking. First time I ever saw tan lines. Most of the time change is a good thing and I think that’s what it’s all about – embracing change, being brave, doing whatever you have to so everyone in your life can move forward with theirs and maybe it’s the only way you can truly make her be happy. (Long pause) Obviously by her I mean lady football.”

Coach Beard: “Good Save.”

5. 'Lion or a panda?'

Ted: “Hey, Jaime what would you rather be – a lion or a panda?”

Jamie: “Coach, I’m me. Why would I want to be anything else?”

Ted: “I’m not sure you know how psychologically healthy that actually is.”

6. Locker rooms and bathing suits

Ted to Jamie and Roy Kent: “Now, listen. You two knuckleheads have split our locker room in half. And when it comes to locker rooms, I like ’em just like my mother’s bathing suits: I only wanna see ’em in one piece, you hear?”

7. Ted's legendary Toy Story line

“Even Woody and Buzz got under each other’s plastic.”

Jason Sudeikis returns as folksy, positive and motivating soccer coach Ted Lasso in Apple TV+'s sitcom.

8. 'Be a goldfish'

“You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. You know why? Got a ten-second memory. Be a goldfish, Sam.”

9. Ted's speech about bullies

“Roy, I learned two pretty big lessons on the rough and tumble playgrounds of Brookridge Elementary School. One, if little Ronnie Fouch offers you a candy bar, you immediately say no and you get the hell out of there because there’s a good chance that little son of a gun has pooped inside of a Butterfinger wrapper. No one ever saw him do it, but a couple people ate it. Number two, teacher tells a bully not to pick on someone, it’s just gonna make it worse.”

10. 'That's a combo'

“So you’re gonna give me the cold shoulder and the silent treatment. That’s a combo. Does it come with a medium drink?”

11. Ted's take on ghosts

Rebecca: “Oh, do you believe in ghosts, Ted?”

Ted: “I do. But more importantly, I believe they need to believe in themselves.”
