For The Win

This is the Morning Win, by Andy Nesbitt.

The two worst NFL coaches entering this season were Urban Meyer and Matt Nagy. One of those guys (Meyer) has already been fired and the other (Nagy) will be fired very soon.

But you know what? Nagy had a chance last night to go out a legend against the Vikings and he failed. I mean, this would have been talked about for years and while Bears fans do not like their head coach at all, they would have remembered him fondly for this if would have had the guts to pull it off.

I'm not talking about winning the game, which the Bears didn't come close to doing in their ugly 17-9 loss at home. The result of he game is of no importance here.

I'm talking about how Nagy had the chance to become the first coach in NFL history to get kicked out of a game and he blew it.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Nagy got called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty late in the first quarter when he lost it on the refs over a tough call against his defense. Nagy took out all of his life frustrations out by screaming at the refs and the flag flew.

Now, if you get two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a game you get ejected from said game. What better way for Nagy to go out than to be ejected by the refs? Imagine seeing him calmly laying his headset on the ground before making his way back to the locker room in front of a home crowd that could have only respected the move? They might have even given him a standing ovation!

It would have been beautiful. It would have been hilarious. It would have been so much better than anything else we witnessed in that dreadful game.

And it almost happened!

Late in the third quarter Nagy again got upset with the refs and angrily slammed his red challenge flag down to the ground directly in front of an official. You could feel his rage as he Gronk-spiked that thing. You knew all the stuff he's had to hear about the way he's done his job in Chicago played into how forcefully his arm moved in putting that flag on the ground. And for a second you thought, my goodness, he's doing the damn thing! He's going to get ejected!

Sadly, the ejection didn't come, though. Maybe the refs felt bad for the guy or didn't feel like making NFL history on a boring night in Chicago. Instead, they let Nagy stick around for the end of another lackluster effort by his Bears and another brutal loss on his resume.

Nagy will be gone soon. Bears fans will try to quickly forget about him and the blandness he brought to their organization.

But things could have been different, a least for a little bit, if Nagy had completed the job last night and got his rear-end run from the game.

He had the chance to be a hero.

But he failed.

Again.
