Dunlap shoots 3-under 69, takes two-shot lead at MGRC

SAUCIER, Miss. (AP) β€” Scott Dunlap shot a 3-under 69 in the second round to take a two-shot lead at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic on Saturday.

It was a long day for the entire field, with all the players completing 36 holes. The first round was moved to Saturday after heavy rain wiped out play on Friday at Fallen Oak.

Dunlap pushed into the lead with a 66 in his morning round before turning around and shooting 69 in the afternoon. He is at 9 under for the tournament.

Dunlap said he battled a sore back during the long day, but the consistent success allowed him to focus and get through all 36 holes. Players battled wet fairways and breezy conditions, especially in the morning.

"I'm tired, but when it's going well, you can work on the fumes," Dunlap said. "When it's not, then the legs really get dead. So I knew as long as I was on top of things, which luckily, I did, my body would probably hang in there."

Dunlap is trying for his second Champions Tour victory and first since 2014.

Jerry Smith is alone in second place at 7 under after shooting a 68 in the second round.

Miguel Angel Jimenez is three shots back in third place. Glen Day shot a 65 in the second round to push into contention and join three others who are four shots back.

"I've been hitting it good and I gave myself a lot of chances," Day said of his second round, which was the low round of the day.

Grant Waite made the second hole-in-one in tournament history when he used a 5-iron to make a 187-yard shot on No. 8. The only other hole-in-one was by Nick Price in 2014.

David Frost, the tournament's defending champion, fell out of contention quickly after shooting a 74 in the first round.
