AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) β€” A brief look at the first round of the Masters on Thursday:

LEADING: Jordan Spieth at 6-under 66.

CHASING: Danny Lee and Shane Lowry at 68.

OTHER TWO: World No. 1 Jason Day played his last four holes in 5 over and shot a 72. Rory McIlroy, No. 3 in the world, bogeyed two of his last three holes for a 70.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Spieth hit a 4-iron through a tiny gap in the trees right of the 11th fairway to the left edge of the green and made par.

PUTTS OF THE DAY: Ernie Els took six putts from 2 feet on the opening hole and made a 9, the worst score on No. 1 in Masters history. He shot 80.

BEST START: Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player hit the ceremonial first tee shots. The warmest applause was reserved for Arnold Palmer, the 86-year-old honorary starter who didn't even hit a shot.

STAT OF THE DAY: Spieth had his fifth straight round in the lead at the Masters. Palmer was atop the leaderboard for six straight rounds in 1960-61.

NOTEWORTHY: Spieth has never shot worse than par at the Masters and is 29 under for his first nine rounds. Tiger Woods was 21 under in his first nine rounds as a pro.
