PGA Tour releases 2013 schedule

Steve DiMeglio, USA TODAY Sports
  • The 2013 PGA Tour season will include 36 events and four playoff events
  • The season will end with the Sept. 19-22 Tour Championship
  • The off week during the FedExCup Playoffs will fall between the second and third events

Next year's FedExCup will include 36 regular-season tournaments and four playoff events, the PGA Tour announced Monday.

The Tour Championship by Coca-Cola at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta Sept. 19-22 will conclude the FedExCup's seventh run.

"We are extremely pleased with the continued stability and strength of the PGA Tour schedule," Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said. "While the upcoming season is unique in that our traditional fall tournaments are shifting to the start of the 2013-2014 season, we are very excited about the upcoming change that will establish a definitive end to the PGA Tour season at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola."

The season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii will conclude Jan. 7 -- a Monday. The Tour will stay in Hawaii one more week for the Sony Open before heading to the mainland for its traditional West Coast, six-week stay, beginning with the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation in La Quinta, Calif. (Jan. 17-20), and concluding with the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship at Dove Mountain, Ariz. (Feb. 20-24).

From there the Tour will be in the Southeast and Texas for 13 weeks, starting with the Honda Classic (Feb. 28-March 3) and ending with the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Texas (May 23-26).

The schedule then takes the players through the Midwest and Northeast over the following seven weeks, beginning with the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio (May 30-June 2) and ending with the John Deere Classic (July 11-14) in Illinois.

The major season begins as it always does with the Masters in Augusta, Ga., from April 11-14. The U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Penn., June 13-16; the British Open at Muirfield in Scotland July 18-21, and the final major of the season, the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., is Aug. 8-11.

The FedExCup Playoffs open Aug. 22-25 with The Barclays at Liberty National Golf Course in New Jersey City, then shift to the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston and BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club outside of Chicago, before concluding at the Tour Championship.

Major changes from the 2012 schedule:

  • The Mayakoba Golf Classic moves from its February slot opposite the Accenture Match Play Championship to its own fall date as part of the beginning to the 2013-2014 FedExCup Season.
  • Due to the Masters Tournament concluding on April 14, the Valero Texas Open moves from two weeks after the Masters to immediately before the Masters.
  • The off week during the FedExCup Playoffs will fall between the second and third events, the Deutsche Bank Championship (Aug. 30-Sept. 2) and the BMW Championship (Sept. 12-15). Another off week falls between the Tour Championship by Coca-Cola and the Presidents Cup, which will be held the week of Sept. 30 at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Also in 2013, there will be a slight increase in FedExCup points distribution for the three additional events scheduled opposite major championships and World Golf Championships -- the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com, True South Classic and Reno-Tahoe Open. The winners of these events will earn 300 points, up from 250.
