Oklahoma high school team honors RB after his mother charged with murder in shooting death

An Oklahoma high school football player was shot and killed on Thursday.

The Beggs (Oklahoma) High School football team led several in-game tributes on Friday night to remember Kayson Toliver, its former running back who died at his Nuyaka, Okla., home Thursday in a triple shooting. Toliver's mother has been charged.

According to an affidavit released by the Okmulgee County Sheriff’s Office on Friday (and obtained by The Associated Press), Toliver's mother, Amy Hall, told investigators that she shot and killed her 18-year-old son while he slept.

Hall, 38, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of shooting with intent to kill, according to the affidavit. Hall also told investigators she shot her 16-year-old daughter in the head. The girl remains in critical condition. Hall said she attempted to shoot her 14-year-old daughter and planned to kill herself afterward, according to the affidavit.

Authorities are still investigating a motive, Okmulgee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Duston Todd told The Associated Press

As the Tulsa World reported, Friday night's game featured several moments dedicated to Toliver. The coin toss took place at the 27-yard line, with flowers decorating the scene. (Toliver wore No. 27.) Sperry High School fans wore white T-shirts featuring No. 27 and gave a standing ovation when Beggs players ran onto the field. The Golden Demons lined up with 10 players on the field, and after Sperry missed a field goal early in the game, both teams observed a moment of silence with the fans.

According to the World, Toliver, a senior, was one of the Golden Demons' offensive catalysts, totaling 580 yards and five touchdowns in 2018.
