Nationally ranked high school football team in Kentucky quarantining after positive COVID-19 test

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The nationally ranked Trinity High School football team has been quarantined after a player tested positive for COVID-19, and the Shamrocks’ home game Friday against North Laurel (London) has been canceled.

Trinity athletic director Rob Saxton said Monday the Shamrocks plan to return to practice Nov. 12, one day before they are scheduled to host Marshall County in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Trinity (6-0) beat Bowling Green 42-7 on Friday and is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 6A and No. 14 in the nation in the USA TODAY Super 25.

Saxton said a junior reserve who typically is part of the team’s 60-person dress list for varsity games received a positive COVID-19 test result Sunday. Saxton said the player’s last contact with Trinity team members was Wednesday.

“One of his friends who doesn’t play football at Trinity was positive for COVID, so the football player’s mother didn’t send him to school or football on Thursday,” Saxton said. “The mom got the test results back Sunday that the (football player) is positive. … (The football player) wasn’t around the team Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.”

Saxton said health department officials advised the entire team to quarantine for two weeks since its last contact with the player who tested positive.

The Shamrocks are heavy favorites to win their second straight Class 6A state championship this season.
