Canada's Boone Jenner suspended for three WJC games

  • Final rosters will be submitted on Tuesday afternoon

Canada will be without center Boone Jenner for three games after he was suspended on Monday for a late hit in a tuneup game to the world junior championships.

The open-ice hit left Swedish defenseman Jesper Pettersson with a dislocated shoulder and a fractured wrist. He will miss the tournament, which begins the day after Christmas in Ufa, Russia.

Jenner was ejected for charging.

"The video material indicated that the hit was late and delivered with no intention to play the puck and with Pettersson being in a vulnerable position," the International ice Hockey Federation said in a statement. "The five-man IIHF Disciplinary Panel is of the opinion that the application of playing rule 552b (charging) is correct and that it was Jenner's intention to deliver the forceful check in spite of having the opportunity to at least make an attempt to avoid contact on Pettersson. The hit was delivered far too late. This resulted in an injury to Sweden's Pettersson and for this Jenner is to be held accountable."

Jenner will miss games against Germany, Slovakia and the USA. He'll be available for the final preliminary round against Russia. He played in last year's tournament, picking up two assists and 29 penalty minutes for the bronze medalists.

Jenner, who was taken in the second round by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2011, has 27 goals in 32 games with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League.

WJC teams will submit their final rosters on Tuesday afternoon.

Sweden is defending champion and host Russia won silver. The USA, which had won medals the previous two years, got off to a slow start last year and ended up in the relegation round.
