Reports: R.A. Dickey close to joining Toronto Blue Jays

Staff report
The Mets' R.A. Dickey won 20 games and led the National League with 230 strikeouts in 2012.
  • The Blue Jays are close to adding Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to postseason haul
  • Negotiating a contract extension has kept the deal from completion

Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey is close to being dealt by the New York Mets to the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade that seems to have grown in scope as the hours ticked away Saturday, according to multiple reports.

Contract extension talks broke down several days ago between Dickey and the Mets, who are trying to accumulate young players and could be getting standout minor league catcher Travis d'Arnaud as the centerpiece of the package, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Talks between New York and Toronto have been steady but methodical. The Blue Jays are negotiating a contract extension with Dickey, a knuckleball specialist who won 20 games last season but will begin the season at age 38.

If the trade goes through, it would cap a spectacular offseason for the Blue Jays, who acquired starters Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle, shortstop Jose Reyes, infielder Emilio Bonafacio, and catcher John Buck from the Miami Marlins.

Toronto also signed left fielder Melky Cabrera at a discount because he'd served a 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test.
