Melky Cabrera signs with White Sox

Cabrera hit .301 in 568 at-bats in 2014.

The Chicago White Sox continued their aggressive offseason buildup by signing outfielder Melky Cabrera to a three-year, $42 million contract, according to multiple reports.

Cabrera's signing comes days after the White Sox signed closer David Robertson to a four-year, $46 million deal, and made a six-player trade with Oakland that netted them right-handed starter Jeff Samardzija. They also signed first baseman Adam LaRoche to a two-year, $25 million contract and reliever Zach Duke to a three-year deal.

In signing Cabrera, 30, Chicago takes one of the last premium outfielders off the free agent market while further establishing itself as a threat - if not the favorite - in the American League Central.

Cabrera fared much better in the second of his two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, batting .301 with 16 home runs and a .351 on-base percentage. In Chicago, he'll play alongside center fielder Adam Eaton and right fielder Avisail Garcia, while the White Sox will aim to trade veteran Dayan Viciedo.

Cabrera joins the White Sox three seasons after he received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for testosterone while with the San Francisco Giants. After that season, he signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Blue Jays.
