Cubs' Kyle Schwarber carted off after collision in outfield

PHOENIX (AP) — Chicago Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber was carted off the field Thursday night with a left leg injury after colliding with center fielder Dexter Fowler on a play that resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Arizona's Jean Segura.

Segura, who also hit a leadoff homer in the first, hit John Lackey's pitch to deep left-center in the second inning with Schwarber and Fowler giving chase. They collided on the warning track in front of the 413-foot sign at Chase Field.

"It had bad things written all over it," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "The guy hits the ball in the one spot that we can't cover. ... I'd just rather see the ball go over the fence right there. We'd have been fine."

Fowler stayed on the ground for several minutes before standing with some help and climbing on the cart.

The Cubs said X-rays were negative for any fracture but an MRI was scheduled for Friday. Schwarber said his knee and ankle were "tight and sore."

"Can't get mad about playing hard and getting hurt," he said. "Rather play hard and get hurt than play not hard and not get hurt."

Schwarber, the fourth overall pick in the 2014 draft, made the Cubs' opening day roster in just third major league season. He is the Cubs' backup catcher.

If MLB got Jose Bautista slide ruling right, why does it feel so wrong?
