Mets' Jacob deGrom throwing in Florida as newborn son's health improves

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said Sunday morning that the health of Jacob deGrom's newborn son has improved.

The club placed the right-hander on family emergency leave Saturday because of "health complications" with Jaxon Anthony, who was born Monday.

"Last night I talked to him," Collins told reporters. "The baby is doing better. That was a good sign. I just told Jake he needs to get some rest and mix in a meal."

Collins said deGrom seems exhausted, but more "mentally more than physically."In addition to the baby, deGrom has been dealing with right lat tightness, which forced him out of his only start of the season on April 8. He was scratched from a start last week and won't go Tuesday in Philadelphia, when Logan Verrett will fill in again.

DeGrom was throwing a 40-pitch bullpen session at the team's facility in Florida, commuting from the family's home in DeLand, and the Mets believe he can make his start over the weekend if his family situation allows.
