Major League Baseball's longest hitting slump is finally over.

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis snapped an 0-for-54 slump with a two-run single off Boston Red Sox's Rick Porcello on Saturday. It was the longest drought ever by a position player. He broke Eugenio Velez's record of 46 at-bats earlier this week.

Davis hit a 1-0 pitch to shallow right, driving in Trey Mancini and Dwight Smith Jr.

It had been 210 days since Davis lost got a hit last Sept. 14. This season, he was 0-for-33 with 16 strikeouts before finally getting his first hit of the season.

"That's a long time without getting a hit," he said. "I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but obviously something special."

Davis had been humble during the entire hitless streak and understood the boos he received at home games. But at Fenway Park, he received an ovation from fans and even showed his sense of humor when he asked for the ball that broke the streak.

"I said it a couple of weeks ago: 'You have to embrace it at some point,'" he said.

Davis finished 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles and four RBI, raising his batting average to .079.

Davis was once one of the MLB's most-feared sluggers, having led the majors in home runs in both 2013 and 2015.

But last season, Davis batted only .168 and struggled mightily down the stretch. The slump seeped over into the 2019 season as he set the MLB record for futility at the plate for an everyday player.

"The team did a rally around him a few minutes ago and a couple of guys said a couple of nice things," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. "We know how hard he's been grinding. We know how hard it's been on him. Our guys have been pulling for him big-time."
