Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki gifts Czech player bags of candy after hitting him with 101 mph pitch

Willie Escala was visibly in pain after taking a 101 mph Roki Sasaki pitch to the leg during a World Baseball Classic game Saturday, but the Czech Republic hitter made out well in the end.

Following a Japanese tradition of offering a gift after hitting a batter with a pitch, the Japanese pitching phenom gave Escala two massive bags of candy the next morning.

Sasaki, perhaps the hardest thrower in the WBC, stopped by the Czech Republic's team hotel on Sunday morning and presented Escala with the peace offering. Escala also got an autograph and a picture with the 21-year-old wunderkind.

"That's part of the game and it does happen, you know when people get hit," Escala told MLB.com. "So it was really a class act for him to come out and just apologize and make sure that I was good."

Escala will also be carrying a sizable bruise β€” located just below his left knee β€” with him through the rest of the tournament.

"I'm really happy I got to meet him and show him the bruise," Escala said. "He was this amazing person; he brought me a bunch of snacks. I'm sharing them with the team now so that was really funny but cool as well."

Sasaki is regarded as one of the brightest young pitchers in the world. He went 9-2 with a 2.02 ERA for the Pacific League's Chiba Lotte Marines last season, striking out 173 in 129 β…“ innings. He also tossed a perfect game in April.
