Ketel Marte is an All-Star finalist; here’s what’s next for the Diamondbacks’ second baseman
The Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte was named one of two All-Star finalists among National League second basemen on Thursday.
Marte and San Diego Padres second baseman Luis Arraez advanced to the second phase of fan voting, and the winner will be the starter at the position for the NL at the July 16 All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas.
Phase 2 of voting begins at 9 a.m. Sunday and runs until 9 a.m. Wednesday. That night, winners will be announced on ESPN. Fans, who were able to vote up to five times per day in Phase 1, are limited to just one vote per day in Phase 2. Vote totals from the first phase do not carry over into the second phase.
Marte, who started at second base in the National League in 2019, has been among the best players in baseball this season. He entered Thursday with a .278/.342/.503 line and 16 homers. His 4.1 WAR (wins above replacement player), per Baseball-Reference, trailing only the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani (4.7 WAR).
Arraez is having a strong year as well, but he has had a less productive season than Marte. Arraez has a .317/.344/.391 line with two homers. His WAR is only 0.9, according to Baseball-Reference.
