When he took the mound for his major league debut Monday night, Diamondbacks pitcher Yilber Diaz did not feel nervous. He has been through too much, he said, to feel that way about a game.

A power-armed starting pitcher, he used to panhandle for money to buy food. He worked as a street vendor and a car windshield washer. He lived hand-to-mouth on the streets of South America. He had sworn off baseball before the game lured him back, then was almost undone by the pressures of pitching.
