Mike Clevinger re-signs with San Diego Padres, will undergo Tommy John surgery

San Diego Padres pitcher Mike Clevinger, who was taken out after one inning in Game 1 of the National League Division Series due to right elbow soreness, will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. 

He will miss the entire 2021 season as a result.

However, the Padres also announced Monday that Clevinger, 29, has signed a two-year contract with the team, bypassing his final years of arbitration eligibility.

Clevinger spent the first five seasons of his MLB career with the Cleveland Indians, compiling a 42-22 record and 3.20 ERA, before he was dealt to the Padres in a nine-player swap at the August 31 trade deadline.

He made four regular-season starts with San Diego (2-1, 2.84), but was held out of the wild-card playoff series against the St. Louis Cardinals because of what was diagnosed as an elbow impingement.

Clevinger was cleared by doctors and returned to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS opener, but he walked two batters in a scoreless first inning and threw two pitches in the second before being removed. 

Padres GM A.J. Preller initially said he didn't expect Clevinger to need surgery this offseason, but that was not the case. 

In giving him a two-year, $11.5 million contract, the Padres will be able to structure a rehab schedule and hope to have Clevinger at full strength for spring training in 2022.
