San Diego Padres hire A's Bob Melvin to be their new manager

After firing first-time manager Jayce Tingler at the end of the 2021 season, the San Diego Padres have opted for considerably more experience in his successor.

Bob Melvin, who has managed the Oakland A's for the past 11 years, has been chosen as the Padres next skipper, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet finalized.

Melvin is a three-time manager of the year -- once in the National League with the Arizona Diamondbacks and twice in the AL with Oakland.

The move represents a major change for Melvin on his 60th birthday as he leaves an organization he led to three division championships and six playoff berths over those 11 seasons.

Bob Melvin had a 853-764 (.528) record in 11 seasons as manager of the Oakland A's.

The A's finished 86-76 this season and missed the playoffs for the first time in four years.

The Padres, meanwhile, made the playoffs a year ago the first time in 14 seasons with rookie manager Tingler at the helm. They also led the NL West division as late as May 30 and were in solid playoff position through the All-Star break.

However, the Padres went 26-43 (.377) over the second half of the season to fall out of playoff contention - a collapse that ultimately cost Tingler his job.

San Diego will be Melvin's fourth stop in his managerial career. He began with the Seattle Mariners in 2003-2004, before moving to the Diamondbacks in 2005. He replaced Bob Geren as A's manager 65 games into the 2011 season.

For his career, Melvin's teams have an overall record of 1,346 wins and 1,272 losses for a winning percentage of .514.
