Pirates prospect Oneil Cruz under influence of alcohol in crash that killed three in Dominican Republic, per reports

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Oneil Cruz was under the influence of alcohol during a crash in his native Dominican Republic that killed three people early Monday morning, according to multiple reports.

The 21-year-old shortstop, MLB.com's third-ranked prospect in the Pirates' organization, was driving his SUV when it crashed with a motorcycle carrying three people on Sánchez Highway near Los Mercaditos de Paya, Baní, according to reports, including ESPN, which cited a report from the Department of Transit Safety and Ground Transportation.

The three individuals on the motorcycle all died, prosecutors said. Cruz, who had "ingested alcoholic beverages," according to a police report obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, was detained at the scene. Cruz is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday.

"The Pirates are aware of the tragic accident in the Dominican Republic involving Oneil Cruz," Pirates senior vice president of communications Brian Warecki wrote in a statement to media outlets Tuesday. "We have been in contact with Oneil and he is cooperating fully with the local authorities. We will provide an update as more information becomes available."

The police report obtained by the Post-Gazette said both vehicles were traveling in the same direction in the left lane. The motorcycle, driving ahead of Cruz's SUV, had no lights, the report said.

The crash occurred around 1 a.m., according to the Post-Gazette. Both parties were out past the curfew imposed by the Dominican government due to COVID-19.

If convicted, Cruz could face up to five years in prison under Dominican Republic law.

Cruz played at Class A Advanced Bradenton and Class AA Altoona last season. He hit .286 with eight home runs and 10 stolen bases over 70 games between the two levels.

The 6-foot-7 shortstop spent most of the 2020 season at the Pirates' satellite camp in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
