Homer Bailey rants about overlooked Reds

PITTSBURGH -- Homer Bailey's no-hitter got a lot of attention. But Bailey thinks he and his Cincinnati Reds teammates should be getting more attention in general.

Bronson Arroyo is about to become the fourth Reds starter to reach 200 innings this season. No team has done that since the 2006 Chicago White Sox. No Reds team has done that since the 1943 club.

On Sunday, Mike Leake will become the fifth Red to start 30 games this year. Only seven teams in major league history have had five starters make 30 starts.

"No one's even paid attention," Bailey said. ... "You don't hear about that on ESPN. We keep hearing about (the Reds in the 70s). Nobody's talking about this team, this rotation, the things we've done, the amount of quality starts, the innings. Four guys over 200 (innings). Five guys making every start. Johnny Cueto about to go for his 20th win. He was in Cy Young contention.

"Nobody's paying attention to it. Nobody's paying attention to how our bullpen is probably the best in baseball.

"We come (to Pittsburgh on Saturday) and there's (34,000) people. We go back home and there's only 20,000. We're a first-place team with a bunch of exciting things going on -- whether it's Todd Frazier going for Rookie of the Year or Joey Votto going for a batting title or Johnny Cueto up for a Cy Young. A rotation full of guys that day in, day out take the ball.

"I don't think we necessarily try to get attention. But I think what everybody is witnessing with this team is pretty special. It shouldn't go overlooked."

Bailey answered all 140 or so texts he got after his no-hitter.

"There was a lot of copy and pasting," he said. "I hate to be rude, but I hope they understand."

Bailey celebrated a bit.

"I went down to the hotel bar and celebrated with some of the guys," he said.

But he was back to work Sunday.

"Today is Day 2," he said. "I did my running, did my throwing. Nothing changes."
