Right-hander Hunter Greene, the Cincinnati Reds' No. 2-rated prospect, will have Tommy John surgery next week.

“He’s been examined by our doctor and Dr. (Neal) ElAttrache,” Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. “They’ve been working on this in the past. He had a setback last week. He threw to live hitters last Saturday. I was there. The session went well.

“When he was warming up several days later for another session of live BP, he felt some discomfort. We shut him down. We had some MRIs done. There was new damage that had occurred to the ligament.”

Tommy John surgery is a 12- to 15-month rehab. The success rate among professional pitchers is around 90 percent.

USA pitcher Hunter Greene (3) pitches in the third inning against the World Team during the 2018 All Star Futures Game at Nationals Ballpark.

“Nothing different from a normal injury,” Williams said. “He won’t pitch again this year.”

ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers team doctor, will perform the surgery.

Greene, the No. 2 pick overall in the 2017 draft who made the cover of Sports Illustrated as a high schooler, was shut down in June of last year with an ulnar collateral sprain. The Reds opted to go with rehab instead of surgery.

“There’s some lost time there,” Williams said. “But we had some really good doctors look at him, and that was their conclusion. He was cleared to throw back in the fall. He went through a program all winter without a setback.

“Everybody was on board with what we did. We wish it had worked. Now that it hasn’t, it was clear from the scans that surgery would be required to make sure we get repaired.”

Greene, 19, went 3-7 with a 4.48 ERA for low Single-A Dayton last year.
