On Wednesday, Boston Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. told the Boston Globe that he will be among the players not attending the World Series champion's celebration at the White House in May.
He told the newspaper that "I don't get into politics. But I won't be going."
After two days of backlash, Bradley β the ALCS MVP β took to Twitter to attempt to clarify things, citing his decision as not political and saying he also would not be attending if Hillary Clinton were in office rather than Donald Trump.
In a Notes message under the caption "Riddle me...," Bradley wrote the following:
"People have a right to their opinion and I respect that. Doesn't necessarily make it true, but at least you get to express yourself freely I guess.
All things Red Sox: Latest Boston Red Sox news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.
"I've been to the White House twice (2010 & 2013, yes Obama happen to be in office both times). Here is a monkey wrench thrown at the people who believe MY decision is political I still wouldn't go if Hillary was in office either.
"And for the crew that's calling me a racist, c'mon now, you obviously don't know me. So now I'm curious. What else am I since I declined an INVITATION?"
MLB owners:Adopting DH in NL not likely until at least 2022 season
More:Late Frank Robinson was one of baseball's most underrated greats
Bradley is the third Red Sox player to publicly state he will not be going to the White House, joining AL MVP Mookie Betts and Rafael Devers.
As Bradley noted, he had previously visited the White House as a member of the College World Series champion South Carolina Gamecocks and again in 2013 when the Red Sox captured the MLB championship.
