'Our heart breaks': Colorado sports teams react to Boulder shooting that killed 10

Colorado sports teams are responding to Monday's tragic shooting in Boulder, Colorado that left 10 people dead, including one police officer.

The gunman that opened fire in a King Soopers grocery market has been identified by authorities Tuesday as a 21-year-old Colorado man and will face murder charges. The victims ranged in age from 20 to 65. This was the nation's second mass shooting in a week. 

Rockies responded on social media along with pitcher German Marquez.

"The Colorado Rockies are devastated by today’s senseless tragedy in Boulder, a tweet read. "Our heart breaks for the lives needlessly lost and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this shooting. We are grateful for the brave heroes and first responders who acted quickly."

"My condolences go out to the families affected by this senseless tragedy, wrote Marquez. "Stay strong Colorado."

Following the Buffaloes' men's NCAA Tournament second-round loss, Colorado basketball coach Tad Boyle began his postgame press conference Monday night by acknowledging the mass shooting that took place miles away from the university's campus. "First of all, before we talk about this basketball game, I thought about this in the locker room before the game, how the events that took place in Boulder, Colorado today – and I don't have any details other than to know it was a tragic, tragic situation. It puts basketball in its proper place.

"But even if we would have won this game and celebrated going to the Sweet 16, it would have put a damper on it, said Boyle. "So my heart goes out to the families that were affected and those that lost their lives."

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar shared his condolences after his team's victory against the Arizona Coyotes.

"I didn't find out about it until I came off the ice after the game, said Bednar. "we got the news that there was a shooting, another needless event that is just sad and tragic. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and the community of Boulder and everyone affected by that." 

The Broncos also thanked law enforcement and medical professionals who responded. 

"Our hearts go out to the innocent victims, grocery store associates & families of those affected by today's shooting at a King Soopers in Boulder, Colo, the team said on Twitter. "We are grateful for the law enforcement & medical professionals who bravely responded to yet another senseless tragedy."

In response to the event, the Colorado Rapids decided to postpone their planned jersey launch Tuesday to "mourn the horrific loss suffered by our community."

Among the victims was Officer Eric Talley, 51, a father of seven who responded to the 911 call.
