Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez will undergo Tommy John surgery

The Kansas City Royals and Salvador Perez didn't get good news on the six-time All-Star catcher's injured right elbow Tuesday.

Perez has a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow, the team announced, and he will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. He will miss the entire 2019 season.

The Royals had shut down Perez for four weeks this offseason when he developed soreness in his right elbow while working out. Perez had been preparing for the season with his teammates during spring training in Arizona until last Wednesday when he started to feel pain in his elbow again during batting practice.

Perez has been selected to each All-Star Game from 2013-18 and was the World Series MVP when the Royals beat the New York Mets in 2015.

Backup catchers Cam Gallagher (a right-handed hitter) and Meibrys Viloria (a left-handed hitter) are in line to be Perez's replacement in the Royals' lineup this season.
