MINNEAPOLIS -- Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva's fists did in Travis Browne. But a bum knee certainly didn't help matters.

With his opponent injured and clearly in trouble, Silva unloaded a big overhand right that set up in a first-round TKO victory in Friday's UFC on FX 5 heavyweight headliner. The bout took place at Minneapolis' Target Center and aired on FX.

The matchup featured two heavyweights headed in different directions. Browne (13-1-1 MMA, 4-1-1 UFC) looked to continue his undefeated run through the pro ranks and break into the division's elite. Silva (17-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC), meanwhile, simply hoped to avoid a third straight loss and a possible contract termination.

A confident Browne struck first with kicks but settled down and regrouped when Silva's big fists quickly countered him. "Bigfoot" then pushed his opponent into the cage, which resulted in the ref issuing a warning to Browne when he reached over the cage and used the illegal move to spin out of the clinch.

Then, when stepping forward with a punch, Browne clearly injured his left leg. Sensing an opportunity, Silva went on the offensive, walked down the hobbled Browne into the cage, and then unloaded a big overhand right that scored an instant knockdown. Browne fell to his knees and never recovered, and Silva unloaded punches and hammer fists to force the referee's intervention at the 3:27 mark of the first round.

Silva had suffered a Strikeforce loss to Daniel Cormier and a UFC-debut defeat to Cain Velasquez in his two previous bouts. He picks up his first win since an upset of famed Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko in early 2011.

Dodson claims title shot

In the night's other featured attraction, John Dodson (14-5 MMA, 3-0 UFC) earned a flyweight title shot by beating former top-ranked 125-pounder and UFC newcomer Jussier Formiga (14-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC).

After struggling to get an edge early in the fight, the quick-footed Dodson dropped Formiga in the second round. Once back up, Dodson tagged him with a big body punch and then went upstairs with a left hook. Formiga, who had been retreating after the initial knockdown, hit the mat face first, and Dodson rained down a quick barrage of follow-up punches to the force the referee's intervention at the 4:35 mark of the round.

With the win, Dodson gets the first shot at recently crowned champion Demetrious Johnson's belt, who recently won the inaugural title by defeating Joseph Benavidez in the final of a four-man championship tournament.
