Jimmie Johnson tweets 'championship is far from over'

Jimmie Johnson needs a near-miracle finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway to win his sixth Sprint Cup title.
  • Five-time Sprint Cup champion takes to social media to re-ignite title hopes
  • He trails points leader Brad Keselowski by 20 with season finale Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway
  • Blown tire during Sunday's race had him all but conceding title when he finished 32nd

A day after a flat tire all but ended his championship hopes, Jimmie Johnson took to Twitter to re-ignite the positive vibe he's tweeted after every Chase race -- #6pack.

The five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion entered Sunday's race at Phoenix International Raceway with a seven-point lead over Brad Keselowski with two races remaining. A flat tire that sent him into the Turn 4 wall on lap 235 and to the garage for major repairs left him trailing Keselowski by 20 points heading to Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Johnson tweeted Monday: ''My brain won't stop ... This championship is far from over. #believe #6pack''

Teammate Kasey Kahne was quick to respond: "If anyone can come back, it's you!"

If anyone can beat the odds, it is Johnson, who proved that time and again with crew chief Chad Knaus during their title run from 2006-2010.

Keselowski can clinch the first Cup title for him and team owner Roger Penske by finishing 16th or better, regardless of what Johnson does on the 1.5-mile layout.

In 11 starts there, Johnson has no wins, four top-fives and an average finish of 13.5. In four starts, Keselowski has no top-10s and an average finish of 20.2.

Johnson's shout-out on Twitter drew plenty of fan response and support, as well as blowback from fans who are eager for a new face of the sport -- something Keselowski, 28, offers.

But the tweet also was a far cry from his reserved post-race comments Sunday in which he all but conceded the title.

"It's way, way out of our control," Johnson said after he finished 32nd. "We can go down there and win the race and do everything on our behalf and it still won't net us a championship.

"It's unfortunate to have the day end like this and potentially our season, our hopes for a championship."

Johnson has reiterated this season that eight titles -- which would break the record held by Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt -- is his goal.

One he's not ready to let go this season just yet.
