BATON ROUGE β€” LSU sophomore point guard Anthony Hickey has been suspended indefinitely for violating university and athletics department policies, men's basketball coach Johnny Jones announced Friday.

"We will cooperate fully with the athletic department and university on the matter," Jones said in an athletic department release. "There is a responsibility that comes with playing college basketball. If a player doesn't take care of his responsibilities, then he loses the privilege of being able to play. We look forward to continuing to focus on our upcoming game Tuesday and our three-game road trip that follows."

Hickey is a two-year starter from Hopkinsville, Ky., who was averaging 10.2 points a game through five this season. He averaged 8.9 points a game and finished seventh in the Southeastern Conference with 3.8 assists a game. His 125 assists were the most by an LSU player since the 2008-09 season.

The Tigers (5-0) host Chattanooga on Tuesday.

"I know I have made mistakes and sometimes it takes mistakes in life to make you a better person," Hickey said in a prepared statement. "I'm not perfect and need to move forward and make better decisions. I know I have let my family down, my team down and LSU down. I will come out of this a much stronger individual. I pray to be back in my LSU uniform as soon as I can."
