Carey scores 22, Wagner pulls away down the stretch

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Carey scored 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting and Wagner pulled away down the stretch to beat American University 73-65 on Tuesday night.

Corey Henson added 18 points and JoJo Cooper finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists for Wagner (2-2), which shot an even 50 percent from the floor.

Sa'heed Nelson led all scorers with 24 points for the Eagles, who have lost four straight to open the season. Mark Gasperini added 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds for American.

Wagner came back from nine down to steal a slim 34-31 lead at halftime. After American briefly retook the lead, a Henson 3-pointer made it 40-39, a lead the Seahawks held the rest of the way. A Carey dunk made it 62-53, and Cooper jumper pushed the lead above 10 (66-55) with 2:42 to go.
