College basketball COVID-19 updates: Nebraska players, coach Fred Hoiberg dealing with outbreak

The challenge of conducting a college basketball season amid the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Several more postponements of men’s games scheduled for the coming week were announced Sunday involving teams ranked in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll.

Nebraska remains on pause after a new wave of positive tests. According to an announcement from the school, 12 tier-one members of the program, including seven players and head coach Fred Hoiberg, are in isolation or quarantine due to positive tests. The Cornhuskers’ home game with No. 19 Minnesota and road contest at No. 8 Iowa are postponed.

“I unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday,” Hoiberg said in a statement. “I immediately took direction from our medical staff when I found out and started self-isolating. I am experiencing symptoms, but my condition has improved over the last 24 hours.

Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg has COVID.

"Our program has been hit hard over the last 10 days, and we are all trying to manage it and get through it.  We are very fortunate to have a great medical team around us that is here to ensure the collective health and safety of our program. We have taken a pause from all basketball-related activities and will return only when it is absolutely safe to do so.”

  • The No. 4 Texas at Iowa State game set for Wednesday was postponed after the Cyclones paused team activities because of COVID protocols.
  • Wednesday’s ACC contest between No. 22 Virginia and North Carolina State was also postponed due to ongoing protocols at NC State, the league announced.
