Two Mississippi State football players injured in car wreck

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State safety J.P. Purvis and linebacker De’Monte Russell were taken to the hospital after getting involved in a car wreck Tuesday night at the Oktibbeha County section of Mississippi Highway 25.

Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol officials said Purvis’ Nissan Altima collided with the back of the trailer of an 18-wheeler that was being driven by 51-year-old Mark Alan Mace of Sumrall, Mississippi, at about 7 p.m. Russell and Xavier Taylor of Brandon, Mississippi, were passengers in Purvis’ car.

Mississippi State athletic officials said Wednesday that Purvis “is resting comfortably” in a hospital and that Russell was treated and released. Officials said they weren’t authorized to comment on Taylor’s condition.

Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol officials said all three passengers in the Nissan were taken to a hospital and that Mace was unhurt. The accident remains under investigation.

Purvis and Russell are both freshmen who are redshirting this season. Purvis has played in four games and Russell has appeared in three games.

Mississippi State (6-6) faces Louisville (7-5) in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tennessee.
