Navy lineman David Forney dies after being found unresponsive in dorm room

Navy offensive lineman David Forney was found unresponsive in his dorm room on Thursday night and died on his way to a hospital, the U.S. Naval Academy announced Saturday morning in a statement. 

Forney was pronounced dead at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Maryland late Thursday. He was 22. A cause of death has not been announced. 

"Words cannot express our pain and sorrow," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said in a statement. "First and foremost, our deepest condolences to the Forney family. The Navy football brotherhood is not a team, we are a family. We are devastated to have lost one of our brothers. We all loved — and will always love — David. We pray for strength during this most difficult time."

Forney started all 13 games as a senior for a Navy team that led the FBS in rushing yards and was named all-conference in the American Athletic Conference. He was expected to graduate in May and be commissioned as a cryptologic warfare officer. 

Vice Adm. Sean Buck, superintendent of the Naval Academy, added in a statement: "The entire Naval Academy family — the Brigade of Midshipmen, the faculty, staff and coaches — are heartbroken over the tragic and unexpected loss of Midshipman David Forney."

Forney's death comes just two weeks after the Naval Academy lost another student. Duke Carrillo, a sophomore, died while taking a semi-annual physical readiness test on Feb. 8.
