TCU, football coach Gary Patterson parting ways, effective immediately

USA TODAY Sports

After 22 seasons, Texas Christian University and football coach Gary Patterson are parting ways, effective immediately, the athletics director confirmed in a release Sunday night.

Patterson, 61, is a two-time Walter Camp Coach of the Year, winning in 2009 and 2014. He took over the program in 2000 and leaves with an overall record of 181-79.

His last game coaching the Horned Frogs came Saturday in Manhattan, Kansas, where they lost to Kansas State 31-12. TCU is in the middle of a difficult season at 3-5 and 1-4.

Jerry Kill, an assistant to Patterson, will serve as interim coach the remainder of the season.

In his statement, athletics director Jeremiah Donati said he and Patterson had "mutually agreed" it was time for a change but added that he asked Patterson to continue as head coach for the rest of the season, and the coach declined.
