Bowl season turns into big disappointment for Big Ten

AP

For the Big Ten, this bowl season turned into a big dud.

The conference got bounced hard out of the College Football Playoff for a second year in a row and finished 3-7 in the postseason.

Ohio State's 31-0 semifinal loss to Clemson on Saturday night marked the first time the Buckeyes have been shut out in the postseason since a 28-0 defeat to California in the 1920 Rose Bowl. Last year Michigan State lost 38-0 to Alabama in the semifinals.

There was some buzz a month ago that the Big Ten might merit more than one team in this year's playoff. That seems like a long time ago now.

Ohio State's loss to Clemson was perhaps the biggest disappointment for the Big Ten this bowl season. But it was not the only one.

Only Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin won bowls. Penn State, the Big Ten champ, lost Monday night in the Rose Bowl on a last-second field goal by USC.

Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Indiana, Maryland also lost in addition the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions.
