CBS SEC title game overnight rating: Big TV box office

By Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY Sports
Alabama coach Nick Saban celebrates winning the 2012 SEC championship game against Georgia on Saturday. Alabama won 32-28.

The big rating for what amounted to a national semifinal in college football Saturday adds more evidence that the Alabama-Notre Dame title game will be a ratings blockbuster.

CBS' coverage of Alabama beating Georgia in the Southeastern Conference title game Saturday afternoon drew a 10.0 overnight rating, which translates to 10% of households in the 56 urban markets measured for overnights.

That ties ABC's Notre Dame-Southern California game, which was played in prime time, as the highest overnight in college football this season.

Alabama's tight 32-28 win also helped propel ratings to peak at 13.3% for the last half hour of coverage.

The 10.0 overnight also represents a 35% jump over the rating for last season's LSU-Georgia SEC title game.
