It has been a week of good tidings for Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon, who is slowly regaining his 2011 form after having this season sidelined by a partial tear in the plantar plate of the second toe of his right foot.

A person briefed on the progress of the injury says Garcon "suffered no setbacks" in a 38-31 win against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity, because the team would not discuss Garçon's status. The person added that the foot feels "just as it did at the beginning of the week" following Garcon's first game back after a five-week layoff.

That's good news for the Redskins, who found out what Garcon and rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III are capable of when they're on the field and at full speed. Garcon caught five passes for 93 yards including a 59-yard touchdown in which he sprinted away from three Cowboys defensive backs.

Garcon said after the game he was still in pain but wore a right shoe with extra padding to alleviate the stress.

"We didn't know if I was going to play because coach didn't want to set it back or make anything worse," Garcon said. "But it was kind of like, 'It's up to you.' And I was like, 'I came to play, man, so just go out here and gut it out.' "

Garcon injured his foot in the season opener and missed six of the next eight games before returning after the Redskins' bye week. He played last Sunday, catching three passes for 5 yards in a rout of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Redskins signed Garcon this offseason to be Griffin's No. 1 receiver after Garcon, 26, posted 70 catches and 947 yards for the struggling 2011 Indianapolis Colts. He is due $42.5 million over five years.

Shanahan said he knew what Garcon was capable of after a four-catch, 109-yard performance in the opener at New Orleans and was "really proud" of the way he's handled himself with the injury.

"That first quarter of the New Orleans game, I think everybody could see once he gets the ball in his hands, he can make plays and he did that (Thursday)," Shanahan said. "He's a competitor. He's got the explosion after he catches it. He can go the distance. He's a blocker. He's a complete football player."

Garcon has 16 catches for 251 yards through 11 games, five of which he has started.
