  • Gaffney had been active for only three games and had four catches
  • Ban is related to a 2010 arrest and Gaffney's delay in reporting it to the league

Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jabar Gaffney, released by the team this week, will serve a two-game suspension from the NFL related to a 2010 arrest, according to a person informed of the reason for the suspension.

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the league did not divulge the reason for Gaffney's suspension, said Gaffney was charged with non-violent resisting arrest and recently completed a diversion program related to the incident in Miami nearly two years ago.

ProFootballTalk.com first reported the reason for Gaffney's suspension and said the 11-year veteran's failure to report the incident to the league in a timely matter might have contributed to the suspension.

Gaffney was appealing the suspension but dropped it after being released by Miami. He was active for three games after signing with the Dolphins in October and had four receptions for 68 yards.

Gaffney, 31, is hoping to serve his suspension and then latch on with a contender for the stretch run.
