Cowboys will give game ball to Jerry Brown's mother

CINCINNATI -- Win or lose, Jerry Brown will get a game ball.

In the wake of the alcohol-related accident early Saturday that cost the life of the Dallas Cowboys practice squad linebacker, USA TODAY Sports has learned that coach Jason Garrett has decided that the team would award a game ball in Brown's honor, which will be presented to his mother, Stacey Jackson.

According to a person with knowledge of the coach's plans, Garrett was set to call Jackson following the game. The person requested anonymity because the plans have not been announced by the team.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM that he visited twice with Jackson before Sunday's game.

"Of course, we all know that there's something more important than football," Jones told KRLD during their pre-game show. "Jerry was so focused and so bright. We've had the opportunity to reflect with everybody what type of individual he was. The focus has been on Jerry up until now..

"We realize the best thing we can do for Jerry is play well. Our hearts are with his mother and family. I talked to his mother two times today already. We are so sympathetic with what the family is going through."

Brown was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent, whom he was also a teammate of at Illinois and lived with since signed to the Cowboys practice squad a few weeks ago.

Brent, facing charges of intoxication manslaughter, had a bond set at $500,000. The club was not expected to post the bond, but has determined that it will support Brent as he proceeds through the legal process.
