Police: Belcher, Perkins weren't fighting over paternity

• Case sent to district attorney who is expected to close it
• Police spokesman disputes New York Post story that argument over infant daughter led to murder

Kansas City police have completed their investigation into the murder-suicide of Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, and turned the case file over to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office Friday morning.

A prosecutor will review the file and then, because both the suspect and victim are dead, is expected to close the case.

Police said Belcher fatally shot Perkins on Dec. 1 in their home and then drove to the Chiefs' practice facility, where he committed suicide in the parking lot outside of the players' entrance.

Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp said on Friday that a story in the New York Post reporting that Belcher and Perkins were fighting over paternity of their infant daughter, Zoey, was inaccurate. The Post cited a Chiefs and police source.

"I talked to the lead detective, and he said not one witness has come forward mentioning paternity," Snapp said.

Police interviewed Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, and she is whom the Postsaid mentioned the paternity issue. Shepherd was at the couple's home on Crysler Avenue caring for Zoey when the shooting occurred, and she called 911.

"She did not mention anything at all regarding an argument over paternity," Snapp said.
