DeMarco Murray breaks Emmitt Smith's single-season Cowboys rushing mark

Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (29) is now Dallas' all-time rushing leader for one season.

LANDOVER, Md. β€” DeMarco Murray set a Dallas Cowboys single-season rushing record Sunday.

Murray's 32-yard romp in the first quarter against the Washington Redskins broke Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith's former franchise mark (1,773 yards), which was set in 1995, the last time the Cowboys were Super Bowl champions.

Murray ended the day with 1,845 yards after rushing for 100 even on 20 carries.

While there had been speculation that coach Jason Garrett would remove Murray after he reached the record, the Pro Bowl back returned the following series with the rest of the Cowboys starters.

The NFC East champion Cowboys began Week 17 with a slim chance to notch a first-round bye.
