Norv Turner still has an itch to run an NFL offense.

“I’m interested in the right thing,” Turner told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday.

Turner, long regarded as one of the NFL’s sharpest offensive minds, bolted at midseason from his job as offensive coordinator for the then NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings in a stunning episode that reflected apparent philosophical differences with head coach Mike Zimmer.

Now as another coaching cycle ramps up with six teams looking for head coaches and several in the market for offensive coordinators, Turner, 64, is putting out the word that he’s not ready to retire.

“I’m not going to jump at something just to do it,” Turner, living back at his home in Southern California, said before a round of golf. “It has to be the right type of situation.”

The right situation? Turner didn’t elaborate on specifics, but obviously an attractive job includes having a franchise quarterback in place and a head coach with multi-year security.

Stay tuned. The annual game of coaching musical chairs has commenced and Turner wants a seat.
