New England Patriots vs. Washington Football Team preseason game: Live stream, time, date, how to watch

Emily Leiker
USA TODAY

The New England Patriots will welcome fans back to Gillette Stadium for the first time since the 2019 postseason when they take on the Washington Football Team to kick off both teams' preseasons on Thursday.

Ron Rivera, entering his second season with Washington, plans to play his starters for at least part of the game, including quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. After no 2020 preseason, Rivera will use his upcoming games to help solidify roster spots at several positions, including wide receiver and defensive back. Washington finished 7-9 in 2020.

New England's quarterback battle between veteran Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones should be on full display, according to a report by ESPN. However, Bill Belichick is traditionally tight-lipped when it comes to plans for his team, and upcoming joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles could shift the plan to play both quarterbacks. The Patriots ended last season, their first since 2000 without longtime quarterback Tom Brady on the roster, with a 7-9 record.
